Hi,
if you are here because BetterSnapTool popped up this message:

Here a few infos:
- I may have to remove BetterSnapTool from the Mac App Store because Apple has introduced a new technology called “Sandboxing”, which was announced to become mandatory for Mac App Store apps starting in March 2012. Unfortunately this new technology is very restrictive and apps like BetterSnapTool can’t work with it. More on this topic here
- But no worries! In case it really comes down to this (I still hope Apple won’t enforce it). I’ll provide a mechanism to switch from the App Store version to non-App Store version for free.
- I think I’ll be able to release a new version of BetterSnapTool before the Sandboxing becomes mandatory. Here a sneak peek on the upcoming features ( it’s not ready to be released yet, especially the gui needs work, but it basically works
): - It will be possible to define your own snapping areas in addition to the current ones.
Here is a little video showing this in action:

November 25th, 2011 at 3:17 pmThis may sound kind of odd, but will there be a way to change the colors from red/yellow/green to something else? Or do the red-green-yellow colors not actually show up on-screen? I’m colorblind, so I didn’t see the colors in the video. Just curious, thanks!

November 25th, 2011 at 3:32 pm@xen0 yes it’s all customizable
color, opacity etc. -

November 25th, 2011 at 4:46 pmThis looks great, I wasn’t expecting to see such a useful feature. Can’t wait, best of luck with the App Store issue.

November 26th, 2011 at 4:45 pmLooks very nice, I wonder how well those defined area’s will work if you have multiple monitors or switch the resolution of your displays?
Are their positions and sizes relative to the screen size/aspect ratio.. and are they visible on all screens?
I hope you manage to think of all that and make it work nicely. -
5. Andreas Hegenberg Says:
November 26th, 2011 at 4:58 pm@153957 currently they are bound to a monitor and to a resolution. So if you change the resolution of this monitor they won’t show up anymore. If you change the monitor, they won’t show up anymore (unless the new monitor has exactly the same resolution and position, then they’ll show up).
You can change the position of the monitor in the system preferences, this doesn’t affect the snapping areas. So this basically means you’ll have to create snapping areas for every monitor you use (and if you use it in different resolutions, for those too), but I think this is the only way to make this work nicely.
Also they show only up on the monitor where you created them. So if you create a snapping area on your main monitor it’ll only show up on the main monitor. (but you can also create snapping areas on all other monitors)
If you have ideas to improve this, I’d be very interested. I worked a little with relative positions but this got too complicated.

November 27th, 2011 at 11:13 amThats a cool idea, but is it possible to define a key to show the snapping areas while dragging? Sometimes I “throw” my windows around, and so it maybe snaps but I only wanted to drag the window on this position.

8. Andreas Hegenberg Says:
November 27th, 2011 at 12:13 pm@Xean, yes you can define modifier keys which have to be pressed in order to show the snapping areas

November 28th, 2011 at 10:00 amThat’s a very neat feature! That’s exactly what I need(and didn’t know before
)
Thanks for informing us! -

November 28th, 2011 at 7:22 pmKeep up the good work. I like Apple and its products and I understand all the sandboxing and why they want to use it but I still want the functionality that comes from programs like this. So don’t stop just because of Apple crazy restrictions. IOS on a real computer is not what I want for the future.

November 29th, 2011 at 2:59 pmI love BetterSnapTool. It is one of my top 5 apps on my Mac – and it might be my favorite. Good luck and keep up the great work.

November 30th, 2011 at 12:20 amI just wanted to say thanks for taking the time out to create this app. I have to program a lot for my classes, and so my screen is a clutter in an instant. So thanks for making my life simpler. You’re the best

December 1st, 2011 at 5:19 amDang, this suck! I love bettersnaptool. I was okay with apple doing a lot of restrictions, but limiting developers that help them succeed…that’s just dumb.

December 2nd, 2011 at 8:15 amYou might want to change your update info for bettertouchtool then, I just bought buttersnaptool because the update dialog for bettertouchtool suggested supporting you… And now you might be removing the app from the mac app store? Yes, I read your blog post, I just don’t think it’s a very nice way of doing business.

December 2nd, 2011 at 10:04 amit’s not really sure if I’ll have to remove it (Apple doesn’t give us enough informations yet). Also if I’ll have to remove it, App Store customers will get a free upgrade to a non- AppStore version!
So I hope this is ok for you

December 3rd, 2011 at 12:31 pmHi – you mentioned that you hoped Apple won’t make Sandboxing mandatory – it’s pretty well documented that they will so with the best of intentions, please don’t keep your hopes up! I’ll transition to your non-MAS version when the time comes.

He clearly states that if it does come off the MAS he will allow all users to convert to a non-MAS version for free. Don’t know what the problem is here.

December 23rd, 2011 at 5:34 pmUgh. I’ve envisioned a window-utility app like this for years, but my development skills are limited to the web.
I’m a UI and UX designer, so if you want help beta testing this new version, I’d be more than happy to try it out and give feedback!
Thanks for making this!

January 17th, 2012 at 3:24 pmI really applaud your work and wanted to contribute my $2 donation but was blocked. Thought you should know as others may have had the same experience. The process I went through is:
- Already had an installed version (prior to your putting on app store)
- Clicked on the “check for alpha version updates”
- It turned out there was one but there was one but also a plea for paying the $2
- I opted to address the $2 plea first before updating
- went to App Store (via the links provided) and it claimed the app was already installed
- There is no way to buy it at this point. Maybe I did this already? Possibly but I don’t remember it.
- I then decided … well i still want the update … now when I choose the “check for alpha versions” nothing happens. Bummer. No update for me. -

January 17th, 2012 at 3:27 pmOh wait. Now I see something i had missed earlier. I DID buy the BetterSnap tool. I hadn’t paid for the BetterTouch tool which is what I figured I was looking at in the app store as this is what I was trying to upgrade. Turns out no. In trying to upgrade the BetterTouch tool it brought me to the purchase of BetterSnap. Is this intended behaviour? If so then ignore.
-
22. Andreas Hegenberg Says:
January 17th, 2012 at 4:46 pm@Ken, yes that is intended
(BetterTouchTool is free and wouldn’t be allowed in the App Store, thus I’m asking to buy BetterSnapTool). Thanks for buying it! -

February 15th, 2012 at 5:46 amReally looking forward to user-definable snap areas! I often use 2/3 and 1/3 columns on my wide monitor, and there’s no ability to snap to 2/3 in the tool now, so I end up snapping to 1/3 left and manually dragging from there.
Good luck polishing it up and getting to the next version!
