  • I really need to push out a regular update soon because many users didn’t realize yet that the new trackpad update caused so many bugs.
  • This version should improve middleclick predefined action for the trackpad (in combination with three finger click)

Please help testing ;-)

Download (or via alpha update)

Also I’m thinking about lots of new gestures that are possible due to the trackpad update. This sunday I’ll have time to implement some of them.

Looks good so far; still playing with the gestures,
with different choices to get used to for the MT vs the MM.

Please let us know when both MM and MT can be used together (no pressure intended, just don’t want to miss that, since one or the other may be more effective depending on whether one wants choices, precision, speed, …). Not that my TV tray isn’t getting crowded, with keyboard, MM, MT, Mighty Mouse, and two remotes. :-) No place left to put a Bluetooth
    numeric keypad…

I am really having a problem with 3-finger swipes in Safari. I have it set-up so that three finger swipe left and right switch tabs. This works correctly about 80-90% of the time, but the rest of the time, Safari “catches” the 3-finger swipe before BTT does and goes back (the default action for 3-finger swipes in Safari). Is there anyway you can fix this? It can be *really* annoying sometimes, like if I am watching a video on YouTube, try to go to a tab on the left, and instead it goes back in the browser and I lose my place in the video.

I’ll do anything you need to help debug it. BTW, I just tried the latest alpha update with the MagicTrackpad update, and it still persists there.

I just read the review of Apple trackpad on MacWorld where they mentioned your program. This is very interesting. I don’t know much about your program yet, but I was thinking about several things. I posted on the Macworld site several ideas I had, and was wondering if they were possible, as they would really expand the use of this.

As we all know, Apple’s iOS devices have buttons, slides and other features in the programs for their devices. The new trackpad has none of this as part of Apple’s software.

Would it be possible to have a row of software buttons, placed along one edge that could be programmed for each program, the way my trackball works now? Is it also possible to solve the screen size problem by making the cursor move at a speed determined by the speed of the finger moving it (in single finger mode), the way a mouse or trackball works. Speed it up to get there, and slow down to position it. I understand the software would have to compute a trajectory, but would it be possible, or it the speed totally tied to the finger and the sensor beneath?

  4. 4. Andreas Hegenberg Says:

@melgross checkout this: http://blog.boastr.net/?page_id=1619#touchpadgestures there is already something like virtual buttons. But I plan on extending such features for the MagicTrackpad

Unfortunately changing the cursor speed sucks. I can’t modify the acceleration curve and changing the speed during a movement won’t work well :-(

Single clicks seem to be fixed, but it looks like its not ignoring the thumb when doing two finger clicks (to get contextual menu)

  6. 6. Greg Says:

It seems like the 3 finger gestures aren’t working with the MagicTrackpad. Other than that, nice job!

I’m up to the current alpha, and better touch tool is disabling my trackpad. A wired usb mouse still works.

0.596 has partially improved a couple previous bugs for me, but not completely.

    1) As you know, the Apple Update caused Two Finger Tip Tap Left/Right to conflict with Three Finger Click. This alpha has fixed that, however, Two Finger Tip Tap Left/Right now only registers about half the time for me.
    2) And sometimes, Two Finger Tip Tap Left/Right registers as a Three Finger tap.

Otherwise, I notice no other issues in my use. Thanks as always, Andreas.

(On MBP trackpad, not using Apple’s new 3 Finger Dragging setting)

My wishlist for BTT (if you can’t tell, I used to have a TouchStream)

    - ignore thumb in corner followed by click for matching gestures (two fingers on pad + thumb click registers as three finger click right now)
    - allow thumb in corner to act as click when 1/2 fingers present or right-click when 2/3 fingers present.
    - four finger scrolling. I’d sacrifice intertial scrolling if necessary.
    - be able to bind numpad keystrokes without having a physical numpad to create them with the first time.
    - mark gestures as one-shot or repeating, and set repeat scale (for e.g. text cursor behavior)
    - change gesture behavior based on modifier key held (in place of TS’s alternate hand on num/quer/home/zxcv row filters)
    - better UI for selecting a gesture. finger set [+ modifiers] + gesture [+ region] -> action & options.
    - palm slides
    - if you’re feeling silly, an XWinder driver?

For reference, the FW gesture set was:
tap/press/release/hold (tap triggers for short contact, press triggers on key down, release triggers on key up, hold only allows keystroke actions and triggers while the fingers are touching, e.g. for holding a modifier key)
slide U/D/L/R/UD/LR/UDLR (multi-direction slides important for implementing scrolling in a flexible way)
    twist CW/CCW/both (ditto)
    scale out/in/both

an action bound to any of the motion gestures could be marked as one-shot or repeating. one-shot had a sensitivity value, repeating had a speed and acceleration values.

Available finger sets included (don’t remember all of them)
    - 1/2/3/4 fingers, with and without thumb, 2-4 in tight and spread versions, no rot/scale for 1F obviously)
    - index + ring, index + ring + pinkie, with and without thumb.
    - thumb + ring, thumb + ring + pinkie, thumb + pinkie (don’t ask me how they could tell T+R and T+P apart, but they could).
    - palm (IIRC only slides and not twists)

Amazing application. Can you add TipSwipe Right Finger Down, TipSwipe Right Finger Up, etc? For us lefties the Left finger swipes are awkward. Thanks

In the meantime I switched because of InDesign scrolling issues to “MagicDriver”. There I can desensitise scrolling per application for one and two fingers and even switch scrolling off in a app-specific way.

As soon as BetterTouchTool can “Disable ALL 1+2 finger scrolling for a specific app” I will use BetterTouchTool again.
I think BetterTouchTool is built better. It just has not the one feature I really need.

Two Finger Tip Tap Left/Right now only registers about half the time for me too. That’s the only glitch I’ve noticed so far in the new alpha.

BTT is amazing. Thank you for all of your hard work. The Magic Trackpad would be useless without your software.

  13. 13. Cheeku Jee Says:

    hmm.. weird
For some reason, 3/4 finger click don’t work for me, 2f tip-tap work half of the time. However, on version 0.586, everything seems to work fine (but just not as smooth, but I could be wrong about it not being smooth)
    Am I missing something?

  14. 14. Andreas Hegenberg Says:

@Cheeku Jee have you already installed the apple trackpad update? Magic mouse or trackpad?

  15. 15. random Says:

so is it just me or does the new three finger “dragging” option (ie three fingers to select text etc) not function when BetterTouchTool is running? or have i got it configured wrong?

(this is with the new magic trackpad)

looking forward to all the updates!

  16. 16. Andreas Hegenberg Says:

@random, nope sorry I currently have to block this dragging gesture. I’ll try to enable it again soon.

  17. 17. random Says:

    @andreas

cool – can’t wait – really love the dragging gesture but really love your customisations! i’m torn between the two! the agony! :)

  18. 18. Cheeku Jee Says:

@Andread, I have updated to 0.598, but still the same thing.
I do have the apple trackpad update installed and I am using Macbook Pro (2008) trackpad.
With this version everything works fine, except for:
    1. 3.4.5 finger clicks (as in 0.596)
    2. TipSwipe would move the cursor about 98% of the time

I have tried a clean install (Used AppZapper to delete everything associated with BTT, and then downloaded a fresh copy)

  19. 19. Cheeku Jee Says:

    @Andreas
I thought I would let you know, according to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4254, I don’t have 3 finger dragging on my MacBook Pro early 2008. But I do have inertial scrolling.
