Unfortunately I didn’t have too much time to work on SecondBar.(Having exams atm) Still 0.0093 will bring some new nice features to you. I hope this version works stable, I couldn’t test it very long. This is a beta! Only use it if you know what you are doing
For now it’s only running on Snow Leopard (10.6.x) Leopard support will be available in a few days.
Download:SecondBar 0.0093 Please report every problems you encounter!
If you really want to test it on Leopard (10.5.x) you can try this version, but it may not even start (but does no harm either): SecondBar 0.0093_leopard
Changes:
- new button behavior, should now feel a bit more like the real menubar (but it’s still slower!)
- auto update via sparkle (so you don’t have to check this blog every day
, you’ll be prompted if a new update is available)
- clock instead of SB button on the right side
- SecondBar menu now appears if you click on the clock
- resize window: press option and click on an emtpy spot on secondbar then drag your mouse to resize the bar
- option to show / hide the dock icon and activity indicator (deactivating the icon requires a restart of SecondBar)
- checkmarks in menus are now shown (selected items)
- reset SecondBar position (Available via SecondBar menu, but you can also control click on an emtpy spot in SecondBar)
- fixed some bugs but I’m sure there are new bugs introduced because this version lacks testing….
Known Issues
- With some apps it works quite slow (e.g. Mozilla apps). Cocoa apps work best!
- Not compatible with Firefox versions lower than 3.5.3
Plans for next SecondBar version (0.010):
- Speed up menu loading
- Clean up the code
- Feel free requesting features if you miss something.
List of not yet fully supported apps (will be continued and fixed if possible):
- Firefox versions lower than 3.5.3 (crashes)
- Textmate (doesn’t show submenus correctly and bundles take very long to load)
- Photoshop and maybe other Adobe apps (doesn’t always refresh the enabled state of the menuitems correctly)
For new users here two pictures:
Picture 1: have a second menubar on your second monitor:

Picture 2 , arrange windows by pressing key combos:

3.) Here you can see SecondBar with it’s preferences open:

Expect those features not later than sunday:
- behaves now like the real menubar (mouse over other menuitems opens their menu automatically)!!
- autoupdate!!
- show clock instead of SB (if you click on it the SB menu will open)
- more options to resize and move the window
- reposition window after you moved it
- option to show/hide dockicon
- bugfixes

I encountered many freezes since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. (Beachball appeared for about 20 seconds and the GUI didn’t respond) Yesterday I found the problem. So if you have those freezes too, and you have installed Growl (maybe it came with Adium or something), deactivate Growl in your System Preferences or install one of the Growl betas.
//Update: Growl seems to be not the only problem. When using Safari freezes occur sometimes too… in /etc/log/System.log something like “INSERT-HANG-DETECTED” shows up. Hope they fix those freezing issues soon. Some people reported booting in 64bit mode solves the problems…
//Update: booting to 64Bit solved the freezing issues for me. (Hold 6 and 4 while your mac starts up, you can release the keys if the spinning wheel appears)
//See newer update at the end of this post!
For booting in 64bit permanently you have to edit com.apple.Boot.plist this only works if you have 64bit efi, to test if you have 64bit efi type this in terminal.app: ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
If you have efi64 you can make it permanently boot in 64Bit:
- Open Terminal.app
- enter:
sudo pico /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
- search for
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string></string>
- replace it with:
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>arch=x86_64</string>
- press ctrl+o
- press enter
//update: a few days after booting in 64bit the freezes came back… but I think this finally did the trick : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 Since I did this SMC Reset on my Macbook Pro 13″ (current generation) everything seems to work perfect (even Safari!!)
//update: in the meantime apple released the so called “performance update” which seems to care about the freezes too. If the last steps didn’t help you don’t bother installing it.

ATM I have much work to do, hence I’ve not much time for SecondBar. So keep waiting, I think a new Version with many bugfixes and improvements will be there by the end of next week.
For the meantime: I’ve had some reports of SecondBar not working stable on 10.5.x. This is because I haven’t tested it on 10.5.x yet. Thus I recommend updating to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
. I’ll see if I can support 10.5.x better but my focus is on 10.6.x

Version 0.008:
Snow Leopard: SecondBar_0.008sl
Leopard: SecondBar_0.008l
Fixed only a little bug if you have two monitors on top of each other.

New Version 0.007 is here:
Snow Leopard: SecondBar_0.007sl
Leopard: SecondBar_0.007l
Changes:
- Fixed bug in window moving algorithm (should now move windows which are overlayed by SB better)
- Fixed some crashing bugs
- Fixed many little bugs
- Improved performance a little bit
- Added Preferences (window draggable, window transparency, activate global hotkeys) more prefs will be available soon
- Added global hotkeys to resize windows (maximize, maximize to left half of screen, maximize to right half of screen)
- Added icon
Not fixable:
- Firefox is still not compatible with SecondBar, if you want to use it get a nightly build of Firefox those work fine.
- UPDATE: It seems to basically work with the new official Firefox release 3.5.3 but the nightlys work better for me
TODO:
- Button behaviour still not like in the real menubar
- Transparency not yet like in real menubar
- Speed improvements
- Option to move windows to other screen with one click
- Bugfixes

Thursday or Friday this week there will be a new version of SecondBar
The new version will include:
- fixed some crashing bugs
- some little speed improvements
- transparency settable
- SB can be dragged around (if wanted)
I also included some not Menubar specific features, but I like them:
- option to maximize the current window (like on Microsoft Windows) via shortcut or via menu
- option to change the current windows size to fit the half of the screen (left or right) so you can easily put two windows side by side via shortcut or via menu
- maybe: option to move all windows of a specific application to one screen (works not perfect yet so I have to decide if I put this in)
Things that still have to be done:
- The button behaviour is still not like in the real menubar
- crashes with current firefox version (Use nightly build of firefox, those work fine)

SecondBar should automatically move down / resize your windows when they get below the SecondBar (e.g. if you maximize a window). Some people reported this feature is not working.
Could you please leave comments if this feature is working for you?

SB 0.005 shouldn’t flicker anymore while updating. (and maybe fixed a crashingbug)
Snow Leopard Version: SecondBar_0.0005sl_alpha
Leopard Version: SecondBar_0.0005l_alpha
Please report bugs. You can leave comments in German as well
